Who owns the UK press
Drawn from public records — Companies House filings, published annual reports and the owners’ own statements. Last verified July 2026. Spot an error? Tell us and we’ll correct it.
Ownership is context, not a verdict. Knowing who owns an outlet doesn’t tell you whether any given article is true — but it’s part of reading the press well, and the pattern below is striking: ten national outlets, eight owners, and some surprising stablemates.
Reach plc
Publicly listed company (London Stock Exchange)
Also owns: Daily Star, Manchester Evening News, Liverpool Echo, 100+ regional titles
The UK’s largest commercial publisher. Notably, the left-leaning Mirror and right-leaning Express share the same owner.
DMG Media (Daily Mail and General Trust)
Privately held; controlled by the Rothermere family
Also owns: Mail on Sunday, MailOnline, Metro, New Scientist
Bought the i Paper in 2019; the i is run with a separate editorial team and sits nearer the centre than its stablemates.
News UK (News Corp)
Controlled by the Murdoch family trust
Also owns: The Times, The Sunday Times, talkSPORT, Times Radio
The UK arm of the global News Corp group.
Guardian Media Group
Owned by the Scott Trust, which exists to secure the paper’s independence
No proprietor or shareholders; profits are reinvested. The Observer was sold to Tortoise Media in 2025.
Telegraph Media Group
Acquisition by a RedBird Capital–led consortium agreed in 2025
Also owns: The Sunday Telegraph
Ownership has been in transition since 2023; check current filings for the latest position.
Independent Digital News & Media
Majority owned by the Lebedev family, with minority international investors
Also owns: Indy100
Online-only since 2016, when the print edition closed.
BBC
Public corporation established by Royal Charter, funded mainly by the licence fee
Also owns: BBC local & nations services, BBC World Service
Formally independent of government, with a duty of impartiality under its Charter.
Sky Group
Owned by Comcast Corporation (US) since 2018
Also owns: Sky Sports, Sky Atlantic
Sky News operates under an editorial-independence commitment given during the Comcast takeover.
How to use this page
When two outlets frame a story very differently, check whether they share an owner — and when they frame it identically, check that too. The Mirror and the Express disagreeing is expected; what their shared owner Reach plc chooses to syndicate across both is the more interesting signal. We state only who owns what; we make no claims about editorial interference at any outlet.
